Tires: damage to tire walls, tire walls, dear bill

Question
Dear Bill:

This summer I used my car to haul some dirt.  I think that I might have damaged the inside of the back tires because when I went to rotate my tires I found that there was something rolling around inside the tire when I rolled in around.  It sounds like bits of tire.  My question is, if I go to a tire shop and have them take out the bits of rubber and remount them to the rim will they be able to or will I have to replace the tires?  These tires are still very good and I hate to have to replace them.  Since I damaged them I have not had any problems but the particles must be affecting the balance.

Thanks.

Ron

Answer
Well, I don't think that your tires were damaged by the dirt.  If they had been damaged on the sidewall like this, they would have bubbles on the side.  My guess is that there is something else inside of the tires.  I would suggest that you go to your local tire store and have them take a look inside.  You should go there prepared to buy some new tires, because it sounds like there is something wrong with them.  I would suggest going back to whereever you bought them because they may be willing to give you a discount on the new ones under the warranty.  I can't really think of enything that would get into the tires like that unless you put fix-a-flat or something in it.
