Tires: tire balancing, tire shops, odd size

Question
Hi. Thanks for your offer of help. I recently bought a 2003 Toyota Tacoma doublecab with 4 wheel drive. With 1200 miles, I picked up a nail in the right rear tire. A neighborhood gas station put in a plug but it is losing 1/2 lb. of air each day and I shall have to have it repaired correctly.
Would it fix this small leak if I put in a can of aerosol tire sealer? If not, does the tire have to be rebalanced if the tire is removed from the rim?
I have read in some newsgroups that it is difficult to balance a Tacoma and special equipment is needed. I haven't found any details.
Thanks again for your help.

Answer
Alfred,

Aerosol can? No, both plugs and sealants must considered TEMPORARY.  Get it repaired properly - with a plug / patch combination (the patch for the seal and the plug to prevent stuff from getting inside the injured area) and the area involved has to be in the tread area EXCLUDING the outer ribs, unless th tire is speed rated then the adajcent groove is also excluded.

Does the tire have to be rebalanced?  Maybe!  Depends on whether they get the tire back in the same location or not and what they use for repair materials.

Difficult to balance?  What I about heard was that the Tacoma has a odd size center bore and many tire shops don't have that size cone.  But then I'm a little far away from the retail end of the business and that could be totally wrong.

Hope this helps.
