Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Brakelight requirement, motorcycle smart

Question
I live in Minnesota and I know that a headlight and tailight are both required but am wondering if a brakelight is required or if the hand signal for "stop" is sufficient?

Answer
If a motorcycle does not have a functioning brake light it is not street legal. Not only is a brake light a requirement, it is a necessity for safe motorcycle operation. Periods of reduced visibility (overcast days, unexpected rain, night riding, etc.), distracted drivers or other road users unfamiliar with hand signals could make operating a motorcycle even more hazardous.
