Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Move to Larger Bike, yamaha roadstar, verago

Question
I am 55 years old and have been riding a 700 cc Verago for six years.  I would like to move up to a Yamaha Roadstar with the 1670 cc engine.  I am 5'11" and weigh 160#'s.  Am I big enough to handle this bike?
Thanks.

Answer
The best way to determine if the Roadstar fits you physically is to try one on for size. Go to a Yamaha dealer and sit on a Roadstar to see if: (1) your feet are flat on the ground when seated (2) you can comfortably reach and manipulate the controls (3) you have the physical strength to handle the additional weight. Are your skills and confidence level big enough to handle a larger bike? If you have spent the last six years learning to become a safer rider and practicing skills to become a better rider you are probably ready to ride a larger bike. Be advised that you are also six years older and you need to make allowances for the effects that aging may have on your riding abilities.
