Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: general questions for new rider, beginning motorcyclists, learning to ride a motorcycle

Question
Very new rider here. I need tips on starting from a stop to first gear without the engine stopping on me. Also, changing gears smoothly. My clutch & throttle movement seem to be off so the bike jumps a little. Also, what is the best time to change gears? What RPM should I be at to change to a higher gear?

Answer
Hi Chris - good question - that's an issue that requires a multi-factorial answer.

First, you probably were taught about the "friction zone," in your motorcycle safety class.  You need to practice over and over again, letting the clutch out while rolling out the throttle.  The "friction zone," is the zone where the action of the clutch and the throttle results in the motorcycle moving forward.  Finding the right mix of clutch and throttle action is just something that you need practice to get right.

If the bike is jumping, you may be letting the clutch out too quickly, or rolling out the throttle too fast.

You might also have a mechanical issue - your clutch may need some adjusting.  Have the bike checked by a qualified mechanic.  You may be able to have the clutch adjusted to make the "start off" a bit easier.

As for changing gears, I do not believe that there is any "set" RPM at which you should be shifting.  You should shift to a higher gear when you sense that the bike has reached it's limit at that speed.  You should shift to a lower gear when the bike is not running efficiently as you slow down.  Again, this is something that may be different with each bike, and is something that you just have to practice.  If you shift to a higher gear and the bike seems "sluggish," then you've shifted too soon.  If you downshift and the engine races, then you've downshifted too soon.

Practice, practice.  And until you've gained some experience, practice in uncongested areas, out of traffic.

Ride safe,
Christine
