Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Starter bike, safe responsible motorcycling, motorcycle safety

Question
I have a quick question.  I've been riding dirt bikes since I was 8 years old. I started on a 100, moved up to a 150, and eventually a 250.  I'm now 25 years old.  I'm considering getting a sport bike, and I can read information all day about good "starter bikes", but wonder how my dirt bike experience factors in.  I'm a married school teacher, so I'm not exactly looking for a motorcyle to sew my wild oats or anything.  It's just a hobby I always enjoyed and would like to continue in a different way (and with 4 dollar a gallon gas it can't hurt).  A very good friend has a Suzuki GSXR 600 that I'm considering, but I do know a GSXR is a very powerful bike.  I really just have no frame of reference to factor in my previous riding experience.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Some control manipulations , especially clutch/throttle coordination developed in off-road riding will be helpful in transitioning to riding on the street. However, many physical and mental skillsets necessary for safe street riding are alien to those who ride solely off-road. The change in riding style and riding environment will require specialized training for safer vehicle operation and effective risk management. The first step to becoming a competent street rider is enrolling in a motorcycle riding course, preferably one offering Motorcycle Safety Foundation curriculum.  The MSF Basic Rider Course is an excellent offering for those seeking a solid foundation in the fundamentals of safe, responsible motorcycling.
