Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: you have to look inside?, bells and whistles, cigarette lighter

Question
How do you know when you need to add gas/fuel to a motorcycle? I just got a 500 ninja

Answer
As with most vehicle purchases, price determines what "bells and whistles" are standard. Most medium to high end motorcycles are equipped with fuel gauges. Sometimes you'll find lower priced bikes with a fuel gauge. However if you do not have a gauge looking inside the tank (never with a cigarette lighter or while smoking) is how you gauge your fuel needs. The trip meter on your speedometer is an effective tool in gauging fuel usage. When you fill your tank you set the trip meter on zero, then note mileage at which the motorcycle needs refueling. Soon you will be able to determine your average mileage on a tank of gas and you will have a pretty good indicator of when to refill your tank. Always make sure that your fuel valve is in the on position during normal operation. This allows you to be able to have emergency fuel supplies in reserve while you are becoming familiar with your bike's fuel mileage.
