Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: New Bike, sportbike, cruiser motorcycle

Question
I'm only 5'1 and I weigh about 130lbs. I've been interested in buying a sportbike. Everyone tells me that I would be too short for one and should stick to cruisers. I really like the ninja 500. My friends say that it is too much for my height and I should stick to something smaller like a 250 but I'm really not interested in one. My question is for someone my height and weight would it be easier to get a cruiser, since it is lower to the ground, or lower a sportbike? Or should I just stay away from bikes all together. If you were my height...what kind of bike would you choose?

Answer
April - If you are really interested in buying a sportbike, I say "go for it."  The Ninja 500 is a great one to start  with.

There are various things you can do if the seat is too high, and you are unable to put your feet flat on the ground.  You can actually have the seat lowered, or you can have the seat modified to give you less distance from the seat to the ground.

I have always had a sportbike - just personal preference, but I'm not into the cruiser-style riding.  The curves are much more fun on a sportbike, and the riding style is much different.

I certainly would not "stay away from bikes all together."  Riding - especially riding a sport bike, is way too fun!

Ride safe,
Christine
