Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: New to motorcycles, best motorcycle, learning to ride a motorcycle

Question
I have never ridden a motorcycle before.  The only thing close would be a fourwheeler.  I am perfectly capable of learning.  The thing I need to know is what size bike should I get?  I am 6'3" and 340Lbs.  I have plenty strong enough, upper body and lower body.  I just do not know what size bike to get.  I need to get back and forth to work and I need to be able to go at least 70 MPH.  Do you think a 250cc will be sufficient or should I go with something bigger?

Answer
Chris - I hardly ever recommend people buying 250cc bikes, especially if you intend to ride the bike on roads with traffic.

You also need to determine what riding style you prefer - do you want a cruiser-style bike, or a sport bike?

I would recommend taking a motorcycle safety foundation course, especially if you are are new to motorcycling.

Then visit a dealer and look at the mid-size displacement bikes - the Honda shadow, or a CBR - in the 600 cc size.  Try them out for size, and see which one you are must comfortable on.  You might even want to check out the 1000cc bikes - you've got the strength to handle the extra weight.

Whatever you decide - you really do need to take a class before venturing out in traffic.
