Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Rider Size & Shifting, kawasaki ninja 250, 250cc motorcycle

I plan on purchasing my first motorcycle soon but I have a couple questions.

1) I've read that a 250cc motorcycle would be good for a beginner but I weigh 215 lbs. Would that be a reasonable weight for that size bike? (I'm interested in the Kawasaki Ninja 250)

2) I have no experience with clutch and shift. Would you suggest I take a course to learn?

The 250 may be a little small for you. I recommend looking into the Ninja 500 or possibly an older 500 Interceptor (Honda).
