Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Performance, suzuki sv 650, kawasaki ninja 250

Question
I'm shopping and want a smaller, affordable bike that can handle 10 miles on the highway to work. I haven't ridden for over 20 years, and am feeling a little intimidated by larger bikes.  Why isn't there a choice anymore between 250 & 500cc, and what do you suggest?

Answer
Well it depends on what you mean by "affordable," and what type of bike you are looking for.

Between 250 and 500cc, what's available and cheap out there are a lot of dual-sports (on- and off-road bikes) like the Suzuki DR series and Yamaha T series (TT, TT-R, TM, etc.), which are terrific bikes.

There are also bikes like the older Honda V series like the 500 Shadow (cruiser), 500 Interceptor 250 Interceptor (sporty standard bikes) that can still be found rather cheap.

If you like the sport bike style, the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and 500 are excellent bikes and more than enough for short jaunts on the highway. With these you're pushing maybe $2000.

Another great smaller bike, and now you're getting rather expensive, is the Suzuki SV 650 or the Ninja 650R, both V-twins. Used versions you'll find in the range of $2500-4000, new are more like $6500.

Don't skip the MSF basic rider course, you really need some off-street practice before you get back on the bike after 20 years. Bikes have changed, traffic has changed, and you've changed--skills you had 20 years ago might take a little longer to achieve if you've been away so long.

Good luck and happy shopping!
