Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: rider visibility, bicycle shoppe, reflective decals

Question
to increase my visibility i have found , at a bicycle shoppe strobe lights attached to elastic straps.  i would put these on my upper arms to increase my visibility.  besides looking like a dork what do you think.  looked for strobe integrated helmets to no avail

Answer
While the strobe light straps attached to the arms may be quite effective in a bicycle application, they are not as visible on a motorcycle. As motorcycles are part of the traffic mix those somewhat small lights may become lost in a sea of lights.
Hi-viz and retro-reflective riding gear (vests, jackets, pants, etc.) are more effective for increasing visibility. As for helmet choice studies indicate that a white helmet is more visible than other colors. Retro-reflective decals can also be applied to your helmet. For night riding you may consider additional lighting and retro-reflective graphics for your motorcycle. When attempting to be more visible, don't overlook good riding basics, as lane positioning and communicating intentions are paramount to being visible to other road users.
