Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: 5 yr old on motorcycle, rear foot, footrests

Question
hi, i am dead set on my husband taking our son on a motorcycle !!! is there a law that prohibits a 5 year old on a motorcycle? My son sits in front of my husband between his legs while riding.

Answer
Which country are you in?

I can only answer in respect of UK and Hong Kong law.

In UK, anyone can be carried as a passenger on a motorcycle provided they can reach the footrests, so this means old enough to have legs long enough to reach the rear foot rests. I've carried my son, who is no 10 for more than 3 years. He can reach the pedals and wears a full set of protective clothing, including gloves and boots. You can get this through websites like www.babybiker.com

In HK, there was an age limit of 8 years.

I can't imagine that any country would legally allow a child to ride seated in front of the rider, between his legs! There are no foot rests. There is nothing for his hands to hold onto securely.

Yes, I know you will see all sorts of combinations in some other countries with less well-developed or enforced safety and traffic laws, but that doesn't mean its either safe or sensible.

Use common sense! Imagine the worst that could happen and ask yourself if you would want your son seated where you are thinking of.

Perhaps, not such a good idea after all.
