Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Final Drive Breather Cap broke - problem?, honda vt500, spot welder

Question
I broke the cap off my 84 Honda VT500 (Ascot) final drive breather, resulting in a small hole in the top of the breather "plug".  Will this introduce more dirt into the drive?  Can I repair with a JBWeld product, or find someone with a spot welder?  Or just grin and bear the $5 part cost (with exhorbitant S&H!), and risk replacing it with my ham-handed mechanical abilities?

Answer
Yes, break down and spend the 10 bucks or so and replace it. Shaft drive is very complicated and even more expensive to replace,on top this it is a sealed system and does not take kindly to foreign contaminants. Consider it cheap insurance. Worse you can do is have to order it again if you break the plug.
