Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Weight Class, suzuki sv 650, bmw f650gs

Question
QUESTION: I am 6'2" and weigh about 350.  what's the best size bike for me?

ANSWER: If you're an experienced rider, you should be looking in the 900cc range and up. If you are a new or returning rider, you should start on a 650-800cc twin, then move up to a bigger bike after two or three years.

QUESTION: I am looking at a Hyosung Avitar GV650. Would you recommend this as a new bike for a beginner?  The price for a brand new one is $5995.

Answer
I don't know much about that bike, but if I recall correctly it is essentially identical to the Suzuki SV 650, right?

If so I think that's a GREAT starter bike--for anyone. You may find that it's a little small for you in size, however. (I have an SV, I'm 5-8 and 170 lbs and it fits me perfectly.)

My sense is that for your size, you may want to look for an old bike--1976-1892 era--in the 750cc-1100cc range as your first bike. They all tended to be longer, taller, bigger, and heavier, and they may suit you better than the newer, more lithe models.

But definitely take a test ride on the Hyosung. It should have plenty of power to get you around, you just want to make sure it's comfortable. That type of bike is infinitely modifiable, so you'd probably be able to add a decent seat, different bars, relocate the footpegs, and maybe make it taller to fit you better.

Also, take a look at the BMW F650GS. It's quite tall and durable--unusual looking, but freakyfun.
