Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Smith, honda shadow 750, shaft drive

Question
Can you please tell me what my tire pressure on a Honda Shadow 750 should be.  I don't have my owner's manual, and I can't find it anywhere.  Thanks.

Answer
I'm sorry, I have no idea what your tire pressure should be. I can give you some ideas for how to find out, though.

There may be a sticker on the swingarm or chain guard (shaft drive?) that says what the recommended pressure is.

You can find a Shadow forum online and ask the group. There are hundreds of motorcycle forums out there with people just dying to share their experiences.

You can experiment and find a pressure you like. Start at a baseline of 35f 35r cold. Go out and ride for awhile, 20 minutes or more. Do you like the way it turns and handles? If it feels too sluggish, increase psi by 1 in each tire. If it feels too twitchy, decrease pressure by 1 psi.

Keep playing with this until you get to the point where you like the way the bike handles. Then once you've got your happy pressures, start estimating the tire's heating. Go out for a ride for 20 minutes or more, then stop and quickly check the tire temps with your hand. On a 75 degree day, the tires should be very warm, but not too hot to touch. If a tire feels too cool, drop 1 psi. If it feels too hot, increase by 1 psi. Continue doing this until you get your tires to the point where they heat up nice and get nice and "sticky."

Of course, this is all up to you, the way you ride, and your preference for bike feel and tire temperature. It is not an absolute, only a guideline.

Good luck and have fun experimenting!
