Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Street Bike, motorcycle lisence, riding dirt bikes

I have been riding Dirt Bikes for about 3 years off and on.  Normally i ride a 250.  Im 6'1 and weigh 180.  Pretty soon I will get my motorcycle lisence and begin to ride on the street.  Im intersested in the BMW 1200's, but concerned that these are too advanced for me because I have read beginners should have about a 500-600 size bike, but since i have some riding experince and because of my size im not sure if I should get a 1200.

I apologize for being brief, but I'm out of town on assignment and have limited time.

For a first street bike, you should buy a 4-cyl bike no larger than 500cc, a 2-cyl bike no larger than 650.

You'll learn faster on a smaller bike. The 1200 will be there when you're ready in a year or three.
