Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: First bilke/Mn laws, how to ride a motorcycle, honda shadow

Question
First let me say that as a newbie looking for guidance, this site is great.  I am 28 years old and FINALLY getting my first bike in a month or two, I will be signing up for rider classes (when the snow stops) and have serious questions about what size bike to look at for my first purchase.  I am 5'11 175 lbs and would like to eventually use my bike to commute to work (weather permitting).  It is 40 miles (1 way) and is primarily on 35 (south of cities) and 494 (west).  Is a 250 the way to go or should I look at a bigger bike, taking into consideration that this will be my first bike.  Also, what are the laws on minimum engine size for freeway/highway use.

The 250 Rebel looks good because of price for newer machine... hopefully fewer mechanical problems vs. an older, bigger bike.

Answer
Hi Justin. I am a Minnesotan as well, and enjoying (NOT) the snow this morning.

Considering your size, you will be very unhappy with a 250 Rebel within a week or two of purchasing it. It is too small and too slow for what you intend. But you are wise to shop for a small bike for your first bike, and work your way up.

If you're looking for a cruiser-type bike, you can safely consider any V-twin up to 650cc, or any 4-cyl. up to 500cc, after taking the Basic Rider Course. The V-Star 650 is very popular and a great bike. You can also consider a Honda Shadow 500, VLX 600, or Magna 500. I'm not sure if the Suzuki Boulevards make a 650, but they might.

What is most important is that the bike fits you physically, so you're comfortable and able to use the controls easily. Go to a few dealerships and "try on" a few bikes to see what makes sense for you.

Once you get above 50cc, there are no size limits to my knowledge for freeway travel.

I highly recommend you read the book "How To Ride A Motorcycle; A Rider's Guide To Strategy, Safety, and Skill Development." It's a great guide for your first couple years of riding after the BRC, especially if you plan to commute on it (which I think is a GREAT idea.)
