Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Gps, harley davidson road king, garmin gps v

Question
I have a Harley Davidson Road King. I am considering buying a GPS. Are the speakers on the Garmin or any other brand Gps loud enough for me to hear the voice commands? Is there a GPS and mount that you recommend?

Answer
The voice command volume will rely on whatever sound system you have set up already. If you don't have one, factor that into your budget, as well.

I don't know of too many people who rely on the voice commands--it's also visual. Truth is, even if you have a GPS, you still kinda need to know where you're going. Just letting the machine tell you what to do is asking for trouble.

I run a Garmin GPS V with a RAM mount, no sound, and I like it just fine. My GPS is on the low-end, I recommend finding something with a large screen, easy to use buttons (with gloves on) and large memory: 120M or greater. I have a friend who has a GPS unit installed on his H-D that came from the H-D dealership, integrated into the bike. Neat.

There was a pretty good article in Rider magazine a month or two ago about GPS units. If you shoot me your mailing address (send to pathahn <at> bitstream <dot> net. I'll photocopy it and send it to you.
