Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: motorcycle repair, optimum safety, v rod

Question
I recently had a car pull in front of me and had to go down to avoid my body hitting the car. my insurance company said I had 5,300.00 in damage including bent front forks.  it is a 2003 v-rod with 4200 miles and Harley is going to do the work.  Are you saying that it is not worth fixing and do I have the right to turn down the job for a totaled status and along with a check for nada value?

Answer
I can only answer the question so far as it relates to how you did the "off"; I have no expertise on insurance claims.

Sorry you went down, but for future reference you may like to consider some advanced training in techniques that would give you a better chance of not being involved in such a situation. I teach the British police rider's method of Roadcraft - the SYSTEM.

I - Information, look far ahead to see what's going on, signal to others if necessary
P - Position for optimum safety, plan possible escape routes
S - Speed, adjust to give yourself time to react or take advantage of an escape route
G - Choose an appropriate gear before accelerating
A - Accelerate away

All problems (hazards) along the way are dealt with in this manner, so riding just becomes a pleasurable, methodical way of dealing with constantly merging hazards. Nothing really takes you by surprise and you stay safe.

Hope this helps.
