Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: tire position, weight bias, relative weights

Question
can you put rear tire on front?? i replaced the factory dunlop 404 180 70-15 rear tire with a 170 80-15 metzeler me880 bike ride much im7proved want to put 140 90-16 on front can only find size as rear position.

Answer
I don't know. That would be a question for the tire manufacturer.

My assumption is that fronts and rears are not only different in size, but are also constructed based on the loads that will be put on them. That means front tires are built to accommodate steering, braking, and cornering loads, whereas rear tires are built to accommodate cornering, rider/passenger, and acceleration loads. The tires also are designed for the different relative weights placed on them by the bike itself, in the case of sport bikes, a front-wheel weight bias, whereas on a cruiser, a more rearward weight bias.

The operative variable probably is the stiffness of the tire carcass, which would likely not lend itself well to swapping front/rear positions. I wouldn't try it.
