Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Old Gas, fuel stabilizer, gasoline additive

Question
I have a couple ATVs (I know you are a motorcycle guy, but this question is general in nature) that have been sitting for at least six monhts, and probably closer to 9 months.  Do I need to put a gasoline additive in when I start running them again because of the old gas in the tank?  Thanks.

Answer
If you didn't use a fuel stabilizer when they were stored, I would not try to run them with the current fuel, additive or no additive. Dump the tanks, empty all the lines as best you can, and start with fresh gas. Please be sure to dispose of the old gas properly by taking it to a recycling center.

You might be able to get away with putting the old gas into a car's gas tank rather than recycling it, if you're mixing only a few old gallons in with 10-20 fresh gallons. Even that can be risky: bad gas is bad news.

It is very likely you'll need to pull the carbs and clean them before they'll run properly. Bad or old gas can seriously muck up your ATVs fuel delivery.
