Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: 1988 zx10, coolant level, steering damper

Question
I have the bike but no manual.  What is the black knob on the right side of the bike that has a couple of different settings?  How do you use it?  Where do you check the oil and antifreeze?

Answer
You should definitely invest in a manual, because I'm not familiar with this bike.

Without knowing much about that particular bike, I'll give you some guesses based on bikes I do know:

Black knob? Could be anything. Idle speed adjuster would be at the carburetor, an ignition advancer would be on the engine or guages somewhere. A steering damper would be on the handlbars somewhere, a compression/rebound adjuster would be on the fork or shock. You'd have to tell me where it is and what it looks like, and what settings are available.

Normally, you check a bike's oil through a clear window on the right side of the engine case. You can "see" the oil level through the window. There'll be a filler cap nearby to add oil.

The coolant level can be checked at the radiator cap towards the front of the bike, probably beneath the cowling. It should also have a reservior tank on the side of the motor, also probably beneath the cowling.

Good luck.
