Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Sportster rear tire, rear tire size, hd sportster

Question
Ryan - I have a 1994 HD Sportster thats been rebuilt and modified to ride really quick. I basically just sport around on it and occasionally go on weekend trips out of state. My question concerns tire size. For the past 5 years I've been running Dunlops and this year I've come across a great deal on a set of Metzler ME 880. My rear tire size is a 130/90-16. Available for sale is a 140/90-16. Can I get away with moving up to a slightly larger tire width and still feel comfortable with the bike's ride? Thanks a bunch for your input and I look forward to hearing from you!

Answer
Chris-
For this you will be just fine since  the tire wont be getting taller in size there is not much to worry about when going over bumps because with more rubber heighth the air pressure would need to be adjusted.  I have a Magna and the stock tire is a 150 but I have a 180 on it.  Let me tell you what this will do as far as changing your tires in the long run of things it will more than likely have minimal effect on your ride. With more rubber on thr ground it might get more traction on corners and you will feel more stable.  One thing I would make sure is that you will be able to fit the tire by measuring it.  I am sure though you will be able to fit it.  You know as far as a comfortable ride it depends on the tire you buy you get what you pay for.  I can let you know Metzler are very nice that is what I have.  I would say go for those tires and enjoy your bike.
