Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: speedometer, screw drivers, speedometer

Question
I recently purchased a 2006 Tank Touring 150cc bike and I have had no problems with it until today.  As I was riding the cycle, I noticed that the speedometer was not working.  When I got home, I noticed that everything was connected properly to the front wheel.  I have a feeling that it may be something underneath where the cord connects to the speedometer reader on the bike itself.  It's an unfortunate thing because I only have 500 miles on it.  Could this be something I could repair or would you rec. me taking it to a professional like yourself?  Your time in this matter is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
Nick,

You are probably correct in that the problem is most likely located where the cable goes into the speedo or the cable has broken. Those body panels probably come off easily, I'd take an hour and get out some screw drivers and check it out.

If you can disconnect the cable from the speedo, spin the front wheel and if the interior part turns, the problem is in the speedometer. If it doesn't, then the cable is broken (and that's an easy fix).

Good luck!
