Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Preparing for Class 5 Test, riding dirt bikes, yamaha tw200

Question
Hi William,
I was wondering what is the best process, with the exception of taking a motorcycle course, for preparing for the class 5 test?  I have a lot of experience riding dirt bikes, but I haven't been on a bike for about 6 six years.  I am planning on taking a test using the bike provided by the company giving the test.  The bike they provide is a Yamaha TW200. My bike that I am practicing on is a 1978 KZ1000A.

Thanks,
Stacey

Answer
Stacey,

Thanks for the question.

If you have a lot of experience riding dirt bikes, you should be pretty set to take the test on the TW200, which is just a small, fat-tired dirt bike. It's docile, easy to ride and low to the ground, so it should be easy.

However, there's no substitute for practice, so if you are having succes on your KZ1000 (big bike!), keep riding it and practicing good skills.

Of course, the best way to get your endorsement IS to take the  course, but if you can't, try to see if someone who HAS taken the course can evaluate your riding skills and give you an idea of what to work on for the test.

Best of luck, ride safe.
