Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Motorcycle Repair, yamaha v star 650, yamaha v star

Question
Mr. Roberson,

I have a 1999 Yamaha V Star 650.  I have lost the keys somehow in our move, do you have any advice on what to do?  Do i need a whole new ignition along with a gas tank?  Is there a way to get a key fitted?

Thanks for your help!

-Drew

Answer
Drew,

Thanks for the question. Sorry you lost your key.

Go look on at the ignition on your bike. Where the key goes in, there my be some numbers printed right near the keyhole. Write them down exactly as they appear.

Take your bike title to a Yamaha dealer and tell them you lost the key. Usually, from the title (actually, the VIN number, but bring the title to prove ownership) and the number on the ignition, they can order you a new key.

If they aren't helpful, go to a locksmith with the same information. They may be able to cut you one on the spot.

And you might want to get two made while you're at it....

Good luck!
