Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Hanlebars, medium distances, harley dealer

Question
This question is largely about drivability. I have a 2005 Road King Classic and find the stock hanlebars rather uncomfortable after traveling medium distances. I find that the bars are slung too low and wide. Without compromising safety, what would be your suggestion for a more comfortable handebar? I am 6'0'' and weigh 205. In other words, not an overly big rider.

Answer
Hi Steven,

Thanks for the question.

You need a compromise between the stock bars and flat bars. Fortunately, there are lots of choices.

I think the easiest way to find a good pair of bars is to go to a Harley dealer and sit on some bikes with other types of bars. When you find one that feel more like what you are looking for, find out what model bars are on it and get a pair.

Also, have you tired to adjust the bars you are using now? If not, give it a try. Sometimes just moving them an inch or two can make a big difference.

Also, don't be afraid to sit on non-harley cruisers and try out those bars. If you come across a set that fits, make a note of what type they are (flat, semi-curved, etc), or better yet, take a quick photo with a digital camera or phone camera. Then show your Harley dealer the picture and see if you can get something similar (most bar sets from metric cruisers are the wrong size for Harleys- - too small).

Of course, last option is to make a best guess, order a different kind of bar set, and see if you like it. But I'd try to find something you think will work first.

Good luck!
