Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: 1998 Vulcan 1500 Classic, vulcan 1500, cold morning

Question
When I start my motorcycle on a cold morning, I have trouble getting the choke to stay out.  After a few seconds, it will drift back in and the bike will die.  Is there an adjustment on the choke to keep this from happening?  Other than this, the bike runs great.  It has around 9000 miles on it.

Answer
Hi Steve,

Thanks for the question. A couple of possible things to do or consider. First off, check where the cable goes into the housing and see if there is a round adjuster around the cable. If you turn the adjuster clockwise, this puts tesnsion on the cable so it does not slack off. If there is no adjuster, the choke may be set up to auto-release after a while and is doing so too soon. If so it needs to be tensioned or adjusted, by a mechanic.

I'm not imitimately familiar with the chock assembly on the' 98 V1500C, but most bikes have a tensioner of some sort to prevent the problem you describe. Usually, the tensioner is not real obvious (I found mine by accident on my Honda), so look closely. If the choke control is a lever, the post it rotates on may be a bit loose, and can be tightened with a screwdriver or hex key (allen wrench).

Glad to hear the bike runs well otherwise. That's a good motor, take care of it and it should last a long time to come.
