Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: Bike dumps when turning left, honda hurricane, speed technique

Question
When I'm turning left at a slow speed my bike will not stay upright and dumps to the ground.  What would cause this and how would I fix this.  My bike is a 1988 Honda Hurricane 1000

Answer
Hi Laurence,

Thanks for the question. It's hard to diagnose your problem without some more information. How slow is "slow"? Is your bike damaged from past accidents? How long have you been riding? Is this your first bike? Depending on these answers, I can better diagnose what the problem may be.

For the most part, bikes tipping over (to either the left or the right) at slow speed is usually due to lack of control by the rider (you) or improper slow speed technique. For most people, the simplest solution to to put both feel down at slow speed (walking speed only). Guide the bike around the turn with your feet down while modulating engine power with the clutch. Again, that's only for walking speed turns.

If you are an experienced rider, your bike may have a mechanical problem such as a bent frame, bad steering head bearings, or some other malady. Do you have the service records for it?

Let me know as much information as possible and I'll try to get a better answer for you.

Thanks,
