Question
hi..
i am from mumbai..i recently got a new bajaj eliminator..a 175 cc bike with a typical one down rest up gears..
i am use to riding other bikes before like splendor, pulser and stuff..
can you tell me the correct way to ride a bike ?
i mean when exactly to change the gear and how often the clutch is to be used..i belive most of the riders are not very clear about this...

Answer
Hi Sam

The idea of gears is to allow the bike to go faster and faster without the engine screaming. The sound of the engine should always be comfortable on your ears. For this reason you must not change gears too early or too late. If you change too early the bike will jerk a lot. Changeing too early or too late is bad for the engine.

When you ride the engine offers the most power when the sound of the engine is loud, but not screaming and not uncomfortable on the ears.

Therefore you release the clutch smoothly and accelerate. You go faster and faster. The sound of the engine increases. When it is loud you pull in the clutch, close the accelerator, and change to the next gear.  As you release the clutch smoothly you accelerate at the same time! (the bike must NOT jump forward or slow down!) The sound of the engine becomes less. You accelerate again. The sound of the engine increases again . . . . .

When you slow down you need to reverse the process but do not use your clutch to slow the bike down. Use the brakes for this as brakes are cheaper to replace than the components of your clutch system

A good rider is a smooth rider. His bike sounds good and he looks good.

Hope this helps! I have a web site that has a lot more information on this topic (see below)
