Motorcycle Safety & Driveability: chest protectors, chest protector, dirt bike

i recently purchased a 1999 dirt bike and the previous owner gave me a chest protector w/ it...i was wondering how far down on my torso the chest protector is supposed to cover...i am asking because i think the protector may be too small

Hi Darren

I am not an expert in this area so please get some further input.

As far as I know the chest protector is not surposed to go down too low. It is exactly that i.e. a chest protector. Therefore the protector needs to protect the sternum and therefore the heart from high impact. By contrast your body needs to be able to move freely and a protector that goes down too low will interfere with movement around the lower torso.
