Used Cars: MIleage different than Carfax

Question
Hey Roger,
First of all thank you for your help, I have asked you a question previously and found you were very helpful.  I'm looking at a 2012 Lincoln MKX with 31,382 miles.  The car is offered by a Lincoln dealer and is offered as Certified Pre-Owned.  Here's the question.  CARFAX shows the car being sold at auction on 01/29/2014 with 8,666 miles.  On 2/05/2014 it is shown as in dealer inventory and offered for sale.  on 02/13/2014 CARFAX reports it is "Offered for sale as a Lincoln Certified Pre-Owned vehicle".  What do you make of this?  How can a car rack up almost 23,000 miles in a month? Maybe the CARFAX mileage reported at the auction was incorrect? Does the fact that it is Lincoln Certified Pre-Owned take care of the mileage concern?  Thanks again for your help!!  John

Answer
Hi John ...
Interesting situation ...my money would be on human error/dyslexia/misread odometer by the people at the auction long before I would be thinking that someone took it 23,000 miles in less than a month. The other option would be a traded out speedo head but 99.9% of the dealers aren't in the business of kinking with the odometers and the other .1% like to roll them back and not forward... let me know if you ever discover the answer I would be interested in hearing it.

thanks for the great observation]
