Used Cars: Car not passing DEQ, mechanical creations, drive cars

Question
I've read your other answers about passing DEQ but I'm still left with a question. When we bought our 1984 Buick in April 2011 the tags were good and it was too early to take it to DEQ to get tested. It is now time to get them renewed. If the car fails DEQ, is the dealer still responsible to make it pass even though when we bought the car it had good tags?

Answer
DMV here in Oregon allows us to DEQ a car no more than 30 days before the tags expire. and we have one person who does nothing else except drive cars thru DEQ all day long when they are expired or a week or so away. a car is sold with current plates then the dealer has no responsibility for any DEQ inspections ...those are born solely by the new owner. The dealer's liability for a car has to end at some point (thank goodness), because cars are mechanical creations subject and prone to breaking down or developing problems. Since you bought your car with good tags for another 5-6 months then the dealer is off the hook ... the thinking is that anything could happen to the car after it leaves the lot ...1 day or 6 months. Good question

Let me know if you have any follow up questions ...as always i am here to make sure you are 100% satisfied with the answers i give ...thanks !
