Used Cars: 1999 pathfinder, head gasket problem, craigslist org

Question
QUESTION: found a 1999 pathfinder on net with only 85000 mi  for under $3000.

has 3.3 L engine.  Is that too small for this vehicle? what kind of gas milaeage to expect?  any chronic problems that you know of?  Thanx

ANSWER: That engine is fine in the Pathfinder. Sounds like a good deal.If it is a 4x4 make sure to put it in 4 low and 4 high to check the transfer case. You should expcet to get around 15-16 mpg with the 4x4 and 16-17 with the 2wd. Those are pretty good vehicles overall. You should check the front tires for uneven wear. If they are more wore on the outside or inside that could mean that the front end parts(tie rod ends, ball joints)are going to need replacing. That is the case with any 4x4 and is quite common. Make sure to open the coolant reservoir and check that the coolant is clean. If the coolant appears milky or dirty that could be a sign of an intake or head gasket problem. The coolant should be bright green, gold or orange. These are only a few thing to look for. Be sure to look it over carefully, when a vehicle is priced to low that obviously means that there could be a problem with it.
Good Luck and Thanks for the question, Shane

Answer
That does look like a nice car. Go check it out, it may be a great deal. Make sure it has a clean and clear title(not salvage, flood, hail damage etc). If everything seems correct and the truck drives good and runs good it looks like a good buy. If I had that Pathfinder on my lot I would probably ask about $4500 for it. Good luck to ya, Shane
