Used Cars: car title, title document, car title

Question
Hi,

I have recently purchased (a week back) a used car from a car dealer in New Jersey. At the time of making payment (it was a cash sale through debit card), I did not get the title document.

Can you please tell me how long it takes to transfer title from dealer to me.
The dealer has given me a temporary paper license plate which I have stuck on the back of my car.

I guess I can get registeration/license plate only when I recieve the title.

Thanks and Regards,
PC

Answer
I am not sure of New Jersey law, but I will try to help. Here in Michigan when you buy a car from a dealer it is the dealers responsibility to do all of the title and plate work with the DMV. You get your plate in the mail about 10-12 days after you buy the car. The title should take about 2-3 weeks, that is normal. The tag that is in your window is the temporary registration. That is common here in Michigan as well. Those are good for 15 days. This is the way its done here in Mich. Hope this helps ya, Thanks for the question. Shane
