Used Cars: Land Rover, wheel bearings, gas mileage

Question
I am very interested in Land Rover LR3s and I want to purchase a used one. I have been looking on ebay because I cannot find an affordable one any where else. What is your perspective on a 2006 LR3 with just under 60,000 miles? The asking price form Texas Direct (largest eBay dealer) is $21780. Does this sound like a good idea? What issues are involved with used land rovers?

Answer
Darren,
I have very little experience in Land Rovers.  I have had a couple roll through here, and I have heard what most people think of them, but that is about the extent of my knowledge on them.
I have heard they are good vehicles, crappy gas mileage, and high maintenance (they have a reputation for wheel bearings/seals leaking or going bad).
As for the Value end of it, there are 4 different options for a 06 LR3, and the mileage is in the gray area, meaning no add or subtraction for mileage, if this is an HSE, that is probably a fair price, if it is a lower level v6, that is a little high.
I know the Land Rovers are an Expensive vehicle, and that is all in good, however, that is also why their market value, when they become used, falls flat.
In an economy like this, people are trying to make their dollar go further, and these are not a real high demand among blue collar america, this is more like a toy, for the most part, and I would think you should be able to buy this thing somewhere around loan value to trade in value.
And you can book this one out at www.nadaguides.com.  There is about a $4000 to $5000 difference pending the trim level.
