Used Cars: Question about Title transfer - Michigan, buying my car, vehicle plates

Question
I am buying my daughter's car to trade in on another car. (She's buying my car which is newer and will have it titled in her name in Illinois.) Do I need to transfer the title for her car to my name first or can I trade the car in and "reassign" her title to the dealer without my going through the hassle of getting a new title?  Is there a time limit?  Thanks! Bob

Answer
No you dont have to transfer the title into your name. Just have her sign the title and do not date it. The dealer will fill everything else out(and thats fine there's less chance of an error that way). There is no time limit if its not dated. If its already dated you have 15 days from that date to have it put into your name. There is no sales tax when a vehicle is transferred to a family member but there is a $15 tile fee($20 if you want it the same day). If you end up putting it in your name you will also have to buy a new plate. You cannot transfer your daughters plate. If you need a new plate for the vehicle you are purchasing it might make since to put your daughters car in your name, buy a plate for that car and transfer it to the new vehicle. Plates for "new" cars are very expensive where transferring a plate is just $8. I would need more info on your vehicles to find out if buying or transferring a plate would be more beneficial for you.  Hope this helps, Shane
