Used Cars: car title lein, release of lein, local auctions

Question
I  brought a used car in 2006 from a dealership for $2,250. At the time I was short about $300. I brought that money back  the next week and got a reciept for this. Now I am trying to sell the car and I find out that they have a lein on the car. The company is not listed anymore and  assume that they closd down. I don't have the reciept anymore either> What can I do to get the lein off the car.

Answer
I apologize, I sent your answer last week but I guess it did not go through. You need to go to your local dept of transportation or dept of public safety, Some where you need to find out who does dealer licensing, you may have to go to the state. They will have a record of who personally owned that dealer, you will need to track them down, They are probably listed at your local auction, you could go to where all the dealers buy their cars and find them. You need to have the proper form from the state that is a release of lein. This is always a pain, so many dealers disappear and your left holding the bag. The state doesn't have any easier way to handle this, you have to track this person down yourself and have them sign a release of lein. Now some states will let you file a petition and you will have a waiting period but they may take months. My best advice is find out from the state who the owner is and call your local auctions and find out where this person is registered. If I can be of more help, let me know.
