Used Cars: failed emission, 1997 ford taurus, ford taurus

Question
In November, I bought a 1997 Ford Taurus for my daughter from a by owner out of the paper. My daughter decided to by another car. I than sold it a friend. He told me it won't pass inspection and that the previous owner had failed the inspection before he sold the car to me. Who's responsible. My friend wants his money back and I'm going to pay to put it back in my name again.

Answer
I wouldn't think there is any recourse to previous owner, if you bought a car knowing the state was out at the time, I would think that in order to register the car in your name you would have to have an emissions test? You need to check with your local court house, who does your vehicle registrations and see what your state laws are. Also your friend bought it knowing it was out of inspection and it is a 97 model, I don't think that is your responsibility? Check with your court house and see what they say. Wish I could be further help but everyone has different state laws.
