Used Cars: 4runner, decent gas mileage, toyota sr5

Hi, I am looking into getting my first car, and i have been considering either a
1996 or 1998 toyota sr5 4runner.  both cars are automatic, 3.4l v6... My
parents want me to get something reasonably big, they think that it is safer.  
the 1998 has about 160,000 miles on it, and costs 5500.  the 1996 has about
100,000 miles and is $6000.  
Any thoughts? is 160,000 miles to many for a 4runner?

When talking about the 4runners I am not real concerned about mileage, if they have been taken care of.  Pending on the condition of the two, I would probably prefer the lower mileage one just because off the cuff it seems like a better deal.  Regardless of which one you choose I still recommend running a carfax report and having the vehicle inspected by a reputable mechanic.  And your parents can rest knowing that the 4runners are some of the safest on the road and compared to its competitors, they do pretty decent gas mileage and are real reliable and low maintenance.
