Used Cars: Used Car, lien holder, state of michigan

Question
I'm in the process of selling my honda, but I seems to have misplaced the title.  The car was paid off over five years ago, thought when I went for a duplicate the DMV said that there was still a lien on the car.  The company who sold me my car is now out of business.  How do I get another title?  The car can never be sold if I have no clean title.

Answer
The company who sold you the car isn't the bank. Who was the loan with? If you made payments at the dealership than you had a "buy Here Pay Here" loan and the dealer was the lien holder. What state are you in? You should still be able to get your title, it will just have a lien on it. Do you have any receipts from your payments? Most banks don't just go out of business they get bought by other banks. If that is the case the new bank would have all of the old records. I know in my state of Michigan we hold our own titles and the bank signs them off when we pay the loan in full. I wish I could be more help, it sounds like with a little homework you should be able to track down the old bank.  Thanks for the question, Shane
