Used Cars: Used car problems, power steering fluid, dodge truck

Question
Hi Jay,

I purchased a dodge truck about 2 weeks ago now and have noticed that it is burning up a lot of power steering fluid. The car was purchased "as is" from a dealership here in California. I was wondering if I have any recourse with the dealership because of the fact that the issue has to do with the steering and could therfore be deemed a safety issue? Also the dealership is certified by suzuki and I wanted to know if this would give me any sort of leverage?

Answer
Usually in these situations there really isnt much "legally" that you can do.  Generally it always goes back to what type of people you bought from.  If they have a good reputation, and just generally do the right things, you might have a shot at getting some help.  Unfortunately if they are driven by the almighty dollar alone, you probably dont have much of a chance.  All I can say is raise hell to the full extent, and see how it goes.  I do not know about california, but here in oklahoma we have a Oklahoma Used Car Commission that takes complaints from consumers about dealers.  If they do not offer any assistance you might check into making an "official" complaint and see if that does anything.  Now, if this is any consolation, more times than not, a power steering leak in general is usually nothing major, and can probably be fixed at a little expense, unless it is the steering rack and pinion.  But you might have it checked out before you raise hell, just because it probably is not much.  I hope this is helpful.
