Used Cars: mechanical history, mechanical history, car dealership

Question
Does a used car dealership have to tell you if they changed out the motor in a car before you buy it? I was wandering because of the right mileage issue. Thanks.

Answer
Every state has their seperate rules and regulations, but I am pretty sure that they do NOT have to tell you if they changed out the motor.  And as far as the right mileage issue, more times than not, the mileage of the engine going in, is usually less than the engine coming out.  Again, this is probably not the case every single time, but if the engine replacement was done proper, mileage of the vehicle vs mileage of the engine should not be that big of deal.
