Used Cars: Aniiversary GTI, paint damage, paint job

Question
Hello

I have come across a VW Anniversary GTI that I might be interested in buying.  I am a little shakey on the car considering a few things.  The dealership is asking about 14,000 for the car and it has 61,000 miles. I have not driven the car yet but I plan to this up coming weekend.  The interior looks perfect but the exterior is far from perfect.  The major thing keeping me from buying this car right away is the paint job.  The car has dozens of gravel chips on it.  Its not on the clear coat either, its down to the base coat.  The body isn't damaged just the paint.  Basically, the hood, right and left front quarter panels and grill need to be re-painted otherwise they will rust and further damage will occur.  The person did a DIY touch up but it looks like crap up close. There are also a few less noticeable scrapes on the sides of the car.  Other than the paint and few scrapes, the car is flawless.

So basically, do you think I can use the damaged paint to barter the priced down and how far down do you think you could get it?  I estimated without the paint damage you could get the price down to about 13 thousand, but the damage would bring it down around another thousand.  Do you think this is unrealistic? Also, is a car like that worth re-painting? I'm not sure how much it would cost to re-paint that car, VW doesn't make the Imola Yellow other than in the Anniversary edition golf.

Also, do you know anything about the longetivity of this kind of car and what kind of maintance to expect?  I'm not sure if I would wait it out for another one to come along, they are pretty few and far between.
Thanks for any help.

Answer
GTI's are cool cars, and yes the damage should help you take that price substantially down if you bargain right.  Find out about what it would cost to repair and subtract it from asking price.  Even if you don't think its work re-painting, they dont have to know that (by the way, paiting it is up to you, depends on how much you want a nice looking car).  GTI's seem to be pretty reliable, especially for a euro car.  The maintenance is expensive because it is european, so when it breaks it will cost you.  They are probably just slighty above average on reliability.  But go ask a VW mechanic what some standard things cost to replace... (tune-ups, shocks, CV joints, etc..) you may be amazed... they are hot little cars though, so argue them down to 12,000-13000 and enjoy it.
