Used Cars: buying cars, pontiac grandprix, camaro z28

Question
Hello, i am 18 and looking to buy a car.  i only have about $2,000 - 4,000,.  i understand anything i look for will have 100k+ miles, but i just don't want anything that'll break down quickly.  i'm looking for something kind of sporty, or really old and big, like a buick.  here's a list of things i'm looking at:
1999 Pontiac grand am gt- 4.0L v6 73k miles $4000
1999 Pontiac grandprix gtp- supercharge v6 109k miles $3500
1993 chev camaro z28 6spd leather- $5000 o/b/o (? miles)
1991 camaro rs convt- 88k miles $5000 o/b/o

thank you.

Answer
I would avoid the pontiacs, they were very poorly put together in the 90's... the camaro's have decent engines.. the LT1 had its share of problems but they seem to hold up pretty well... you can bet that its been ragged out pretty bad though... and you will need to check the transmission for any problems while shifting (the clutch is likely to need replacing).. also check the engine for signs of burning oil... all 90's model GM cars were built with very cheap interior plastic.... so if you care about how nice your interior looks you may wish to look elsewhere.. (my 1994 corvette's interior plastic started to shatter if you used it.. ie. center console, glove box, storage areas...etc..)... if you are not a hard core GM guy check out 5.0 mustangs... 1987-1995... the 302 is a great motor and they are very reliable.. just make sure it hasn't been modified.. or it could cost you...  the 4.6 mustangs 96-up may be a decent choice but hard on your price range... my 1993 5.0 is in better shape than my corvette was, and has had fewer mechanical problems... May also wish to check out the sporty imports.. as they arent as fast but are far more reliable than most domestics... integra's, celica's, mr2's, 240sx's, supra's, FC rx7's (unreliable but nice), prelude's...  The convertible camaro will be more expensive to own and will suffer from the cheap interior but the miles are atleast low... i would avoid pontiacs minus the firebird.. there is a reason the 2 1999 pontiac's are cheaper than 91 & 93 camaro's...

I can't comment on the old and big.. because the only old and big cars built were none that I can reccommend... they aren't reliable or economical... crown victorias with the 4.6, 5.4, 5.0, 5.8 engines should have reliable engines.. but the cars are decent to say the least... same goes for most the older large cars... I would wait on the big old caddy or such until you had more money to spend..

Hope all this helps.
Thanks,
Robert
