Used Cars: Should I keep this 2001New Beetle with ABS light on?, computer pun, mechanic shop

Question
Hi Robert,

I just bought a used 2001 Beetle GLS-automatic from a private party this morning. The Beetle has 63k miles on that and looks nice with yellow color. However, the ABS light is on all the time, and the seller gave me the diagnostics from a VW dealer showing that it needs a new ABS controle module which costs about $850 for parts( The parts weren't available at that time). The seller took off $1000 from his asking price, and the total price that we bought the car was $8300+tax. I have researched this model for a week and the electrical problem seems like the biggest problem with 98-02 Beetle. The seller shown me another receipt from VW dealer that he just fixed the "EPC light on" problem last month( The bill was $1000). That made me worry about the electrical quality of this specific model. Do you guys have any advice that should I keep this Beetle? I'm gonna take this car to the mechanic shop tomorrow to check and we can still return it by the end of tomorrow.

Thanks for your advice.

Answer
Kevin,
Sorry for all your hassle, but thats how european cars get with age.   I know plenty of people with beetles that haven't had trouble... and some people who have... They are good cars for the most part, and if you car has had the common problems fixed for that model.. well its just as risky as any other car... it sounds like VW may have not fully gotten the bugs out of the bugs computer... (pun intended).. Its a euro car so repair costs and parts will be expensive, but they can happen to any car... i would say keep it if you like the car, you already paid for it... if you can care less what car you drive, buy a civic or something - they will be cheaper to fix when things break... because things always break... you may want to check recalls on that vehicle and see if some of these problems can be fixed for free by the dealer... other than that.. any car will have problems... so keep it if you like it.. sell it and get a more popular/reliable car if you have no preference...
