Used Cars: Buy car Friday night, drive home without plates, dmv license, dmv office

Question
I bought a car from a private seller on Friday night, and drove it the 100 miles back to my house without a license plate because the seller wanted to keep it. It is now Saturday morning, and I want to drive my new car. I called the police station and they said I can't drive it without a plate. I said that can't be right, or how could anybody buy a car from a private seller after 5:00 pm on a weekday or on a weekend or holiday and get the car home? The policeman said I should have had it towed the 100 miles back to my house last night rather than drive it home without a plate!

I remember when I bought the car last night I discussed this issue with the seller, and I said that I trust and believe in our government and that logic and fair-play suggest that you must be able to buy a car on a Friday night and drive it until Monday morning when the DMV-license plate office opens up. My government could not have  fairly and logically expected me to have the car towed 100 miles back to my house last night, could they? Oh and if this was my only car, my government wouldn't tell me I couldn't drive it to the DMV Monday morning to get a plate, would they? Thanks friend!

Answer
