Used Cars: PURCHASING A USED VECHILE, chest x ray, toyota 4runner

Question
I AM CONSIDERING PURCHASING A USED 2001 TOYOTA 4RUNNER WITH OVER 126,000 MILES...DO YOU KNOW OF ANY PARTICULAR SYSTEMS CHECK OR DIAGNOSTIC TESTS THAT CAN BE DONE? WITH ANY TYPE OF CAR/TRUCK/SUV WITH OVER 80,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER THAT WILL GIVE ME SOME PIECE OF MIND THAT ALL SYSTEMS ARE OKAY AT LEAST WHEN I DRIVE OFF OF THE CAR LOT?

Answer
Hi Ralph
A 4runner is one tough cookie and a good choice...
I really like your question and its easy for me to say take it to a mechanic for an inspection, and here is what happens 99% of the time...
The mechanic will test drive put it on the hoist check underneath for oil leaks take tires off and check rotors and brake cylinders its all a visual inspection
For a few bucks more i would ask for a COMPRESSION CHECK UP,think of it as a chest X-ray for your engine it will cost about half hour labour and will tell you if engine is in sound condition
You did not mention buying private or from dealer either way take vehicle for an independent inspection and if your not allowed you must walk away from making a deal...
