Trucking: reefer rates, broker loads, oversize freight

Question
Hello Jim, i am just wondering if you might know current rates for produce hauling from California to Ontario, or Quebec for independent operators. i know its kind of seasonal work for the reefer but the versatility factor is that i can also LTL freight. I've been mainly livestock for 14yrs then ive done stepdeck oversize freight, but i have a burning urge to do the California thing, even Florida, but im not too sure on the rates for a independent.  I am pretty much a independent right now that runs through another guys authority, and he finds my loads, i enjoy it but its not really what i would like to do.  im asking this question to you so maybe it might give me a better idea of the rates so if i buy a Reefer, i know what kind of money i can make.

Answer
Scott, this business tends to be seasonal so rates will fluctuate based on supply and demand throughoput the year.
There are numerous load boards on line that postr broker loads if you have your own authority, but if you want the stability of an established carrioer I would just start calling teh carriers taht serviec the lanes you are interested in.  Here is a place to identify potential opportunities:

Hope this helps.
